Haiku North America attendees will have a unique experience on Saturday, August 17th, to see a performance of three grand prize-winning renku from the Haiku Society of America's Einbond Renku Contest.

Haiku North America has a room block of discounted rooms on the Queen Mary.  

Last week, we exceeded our room block, which is actually very good news for the conference.  

To accommodate the additional demand, Queen Mary has added rooms to our room block, so if you had any problems with your reservation last week, please call them again and you should be able to register. There are still rooms available.

We would like to clarify that it is not necessary to be registered for the conference to enter the contest.  This is one way people who cannot attend HNA can also participate.

The contest winners will be announced at the conference banquet on Saturday night.  It is not necessary to be present to win (although it is always exciting for everyone to have the winner present to receive their check on the spot!).

The prizes are $150 for 1st place, $100 for 2nd place, and $50 for 3rd place.  There will be 3 Honorable Mentions.

Ron Moss is a Tasmania visual artist, poet and lover of haiku.  His poetry has won international awards and has been translated into several languages.  Ron's art is sold as limited edition-prints and originals.  He has been featured in poetry journals and has designed several award winning poetry books.

He has conducted haiku workshops at the Tasmanian Writer's Center, was a guest presenter at the Queensland Poetry Festival and the Tasmanian Poetry Festival.

Ron Moss is going to be at Haiku North America.  Here on his first trip to the United States, Ron will present a session on haiga on Saturday, August 17th.

Ron explains, "I consider myself a student of the Zen arts, which have fascinated me from an early age.  I enjoy the distilled conciseness of haiku, the exploration of art and mixed media, and sometimes, as in ancient times, I like to combine the two.  My passion is to push the boundaries of images and words into new ways."

On Friday evening of Haiku North America, Eri Yasuhara of CSU San Bernardino will introduce the Lemon Notebook (Remonchô), a coterie magazine published in the early decades of the twentieth century by a small group of issei (first generation Japanese immigrant) laborers and housewives living in inland Southern California.

The group met informally every month to read and critique each other’s poetry and paid a small membership fee that supported publication of the journal. Their main focus of study and publication was the free-form haiku (jiyûritsu haiku) that was gaining popularity in Japan at the time, but essays, fiction, and other kinds of poetry also were featured regularly.

There are thirteen extant issues of this journal, from 1916 through 1919. Their pages provide an unprecedented glimpse into both the daily and literary lives of the first generation of Japanese Americans, particularly those living in Southern California. Dr. Yasuhara will read and offer interpretations of many poems and other works from the Lemon Notebook, showing the ways in which the issei negotiated their cultural separation from their homeland and struggled to build their new, Japanese American lives and cultural identities.  

Eri F. Yasuhara received her Ph.D. from UCLA in 1982, from the Department of Oriental Languages (now Department of Asian Languages and Cultures). Her dissertation was Buson and “Haishi”: A Study of Free-Form “Haikai” Poetry in Eighteenth Century Japan. As Professor of Japanese, she taught Japanese language, literature, and culture in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at California State University, Los Angeles.

In 1995, she became Associate Dean of the School of Arts and Letters at Cal State Los Angeles, and in 2000 she moved to California State University, San Bernardino as Dean of the College of Arts and Letters. In addition to her interests in Early Modern haikai poetry, Dr. Yasuhara has published in the field of Japanese American literature, focusing on Japanese language poems and essays written in the early twentieth century by issei, the first generation of immigrants to the continental United States.

The HNA committee is pleased to announce that Angelee Deodhar will be traveling from India to participate in Haiku North America.

An eye surgeon by profession, she is a haiku poet, translator, and artist.  Her haiku/haiga have been published internationally in various journals, books, and websites.  To promote haiku in India, she has translated six books of haiku from English to Hindi and distributed them free.   The six titles are If Someone Asks...Masaoka Shiki's Life and Haiku (2005), Haiku: A Master's Selection, edited by Miura Yuzuru (2006), Ogur Hyakunin Isshu:  100 Poems by 100 Poets (2007), Children's Haiku from around the World - A Haiku Primer (2007), Indian Haiku (2008), The Distant Mountain (2009).   Deodhar also started a bilingual English Hindi website, Haiku Sansaar (Haiku World).

For Haiku North America, she will be one of the panelists for "Haiku and Healing" as well as presenting a paper, "Wind and Water in Children's Haiku Across the World."

Stanford University's Steven D. Carter will be speaking from his book, Haiku Before Haiku: From the Renga Masters to Basho, on Saturday, August 17, 2013 at Haiku North America.

Carter's book explores various examples of ancient hokku, the initiating verse of renga (linked verse), some written as early as 500 years before Basho.  The poems were all translated by Carter.

Carter is the Yamato Ichihashi Chair in Japanese History and Civilization in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Stanford. 

On Friday, August 16th, Roberta Beary, the haibun editor of Modern Haiku, will present "TIMELINE: The Interval from Past to Present – Visual Haibun" at 3 pm in the Royal Salon.  

TIMELINE is a presentation on the creation of visual haibun through the use of personal memorabilia. Event ticket stubs/programs, school certificates, old letters, newspaper clippings and photographic images of relatives and friends (living and deceased) are examples of personal memorabilia. The importance of resonance in haibun will be stressed. 
This will not be a presentation on how to write haibun. The presentation will be for experienced haibun writers who want to enhance either previously published haibun or unpublished haibun through the use of images of personal memorabilia. The presentation is open to all who wish to attend, including beginning haibun writers or those completely new to the genre.

TIMELINE will emphasize the interval from past to present through the use of personal memorabilia in visual haibun. Examples of Roberta Beary’s visual haibun will be distributed to members of the audience.

Roberta Beary is the haibun editor of Modern Haiku. Her book of short poems, The Unworn Necklace (Snapshot Press, 1st hardcover ed. 2011), was named a Poetry Society of America award finalist and a Haiku Society of America Merit Book Award prize winner. She is on the editorial staff of the annual Red Moon Anthology and is a longtime member of Towpath, haiku poets of Washington, DC.
