Ancient Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks at Fort Ancient
Wednesday, June 28, 2023

Wednesday, June 28, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.
To explore the conference theme of City and Soil, we will travel by bus to the vast earthworks constructed at nearby Fort Ancient by the Indigenous People of the Hopewell Culture.
Believing that soil was sacred, they built a series of earthen ceremonial sites approximately 2,000 years ago throughout southern and central Ohio. These locations have been nominated for the UNESCO World Heritage List. Currently, only 24 places in the United States have this significant recognition. It is expected that the final approval will occur in July, 2023. We will tour Fort Ancient then have a deli buffet lunch at The Golden Lamb in Lebanon. Established in 1803, it is the oldest hotel in Ohio and has hosted 12 United States Presidents. Charles Dickens wrote a portion of his American Notes (1842) at The Golden Lamb.
The bus will leave the hotel entrance promptly at 9:00 and return at 3:00. Attire is very casual. Each person will receive a book about the Hopewell sites written by Buck Niehoff.
This event is available for an additional $85 fee.
