Winston is served by four airports: Charlotte(CLT), Raleigh/Durham(RDU), Concord, NC(USA), and Greensboro/High Point(GSO). Of those, GSO(29 minutes, $31-$36 Lyft)is the closest—and usually most expensive. It is served by major airlines, but is not a hub.
Concord(55 minutes, $70-83 Lyft)is cheapest, but is served by only one airline, Alllegiant. If you are near an Allegiant airport in New Orleans, for instance, flights are half to two-thirds as much as the major airports. Allegiant also flies into Asheville from some locations, which would be a nice pre or post stop(135 minutes). However, their schedule may be prohibitive requiring longer stays with limited flights. Allegiant also flies from many Florida airports into GSO. In some instances, one can save a hundred dollars by flying into Concord and taking Lyft or Uber.
Raleigh(90 minutes, $99-$100 Lyft)is the next cheapest, because it is served by more airlines, including Southwest. Their rates are usually lower from major metropolitan areas. You must go to Southwest to get their rates; they are not listed in travel sites.
Charlotte(78 minutes, $86-$100 Lyft) is also served by Southwest, but it is dominated by American, and is as expensive as Greensboro, and sometimes more.
All this is moot, because at any given moment, one may be cheaper than the other. What is described is a long-term pattern. Here are some current rates (February 27)from Kayak into these airports, from Los Angeles, New York and Chicago, and from August 6-12 as noted. (Prices rise more quickly and higher because of limited flights into GSO)
LAX-GS0: $273.00 8/6-8/13
$609.00 8/7-8/12
LAX-CLT: $233.00. 8/6-8/12

Car rental rates are competitive in all the airports, including Concord. Sharing a Lyft or a car can offset the cost of coming into airports besides GSO. You can also arrive at the Hawthorne Inn by public transportation, which is inexpensive but inconvenient in most instances. Check https://www.rome2rio.com/s/Nearby-Airports/Winston-Salem.
