Welcome to Haiku North America
Haiku North America (HNA) is a biennial conference in celebration of haiku poetry. Every two years we offer five stimulating days of papers, panels, workshops, readings, performances, book sales, cultural outings, and much socialization with fellow poets, translators, scholars, editors, and publishers. Our first conference took place in 1991 in California and we've held subsequent conferences throughout the United States and Canada, focusing on North American poets, their haiku, and related arts. Everyone is welcome to attend HNA, the largest and oldest regular gathering of haiku poets outside Japan. Read HNA updates on the HNA blog and explore this site for more information. See you at our next conference!
Deborah P Kolodji, August 11, 1959 – July 21, 2024
Haiku North America is profoundly saddened to announce that its longtime board member and director, Deborah P Kolodji, passed away in her sleep on July 21, 2024 after a prolonged struggle with cancer. Our condolences to her family and many friends around the world. HNA is grateful for her service not just to the organization but for her dedicated passion for haiku and related poetry and love for all poets worldwide who valued haiku. She was also an accomplished poet, and her latest book, Vital Signs (Cuttlefish Books, 2024), chronicled her arduous cancer journey. We will all miss Debbie greatly.

Haiku North America is pleased to announce that its next conference will take place September 24 to 28, 2025 in downtown San Francisco. Our conference theme is “Discover.” We’ll be meeting and staying at the Holiday Inn, on the west end of one of the city’s famed cable car lines. This hotel offers dramatic city and bay views, and convenient access to a variety of tourist attractions, restaurants, and other amenities. September also offers San Francisco’s best weather of the year, with warm temperatures without the summer fog. Please join us!
