The 2015 Conference Local Organizers 

the Route Nine Haiku Group

The Route 9 Haiku Group is the “home team” for Haiku North America 2015, which takes place at Union College in Schenectady, New York, October 14-18, 2015. The four members of the group are: Yu Chang, Tom Clausen, John Stevenson, and Hilary Tann.

Hilary is Professor of Music in Union College’s Department of Performance Arts. Yu taught computer and electrical engineering at Union College for 40 years, until his very recent retirement. Now that John has retired from a position in human resources with New York State, he has more time for his seemingly nonstop artistic adventures. Tom, who lives across the State in Ithaca, New York, is also recently retired, from his librarian duties at Cornell. In future postings, we’ll feature each Rt.9er individually, with a brief bio and sample haiku.

Several factors make the Route 9 Haiku Group special: The process they have developed for their meetings, the quality of their poetry, the resultant longevity of their journal, Upstate Dim Sum, and the friendships they have forged writing, working, playing and dining together. After the first edition of Upstate Dim Sum, Christopher Herold commented: “Not only do I love this book from cover to cover, I am delighted with what you are doing. A small group, say three to five poets, meeting on a monthly basis, in a casual way, to discuss work on haiku is (I hope) the wave of the future.” It may not be everybody's idea of the wave of the future, and open groups have succeeded throughout North America, but this format has worked well for its members for a decade and a half.

The Route 9 Haiku Group



 History: In 1999, after a few years of discussing the formation of a small haiku group, Hilary and Yu broached the idea with John Stevenson, who lived in nearby Nassau, NY. John enthusiastically joined Yu and Hilary as the three founding members of the Route 9 Haiku Group. Tom Clausen was Upstate Dim Sum‘s first Guest Poet, and in 2003 he became the Group’s fourth member.  Since February 2000, the Group has met monthly at the Tai Pan Restaurant, at 1519 Rte 9, Halfmoon [Clifton Park], NY, which is especially known for its dim sum. (The Tai Pan’s Route 9 location is about 13 miles from Union College, and ten miles from The Desmond, the HNA 2015 hotel.)

  “Dim sum”, the food, is a Chinese specialty consisting of various meat, vegetable and dessert dishes served in small portions, each a bite or two. The term dim sum translates as “little hearts.” Like good haiku, dim sum done right has fresh ingredients and comes in a variety of flavors, textures and styles.  The term “Dim Sum” seemed a natural fit as the name of the Route 9 Haiku Group’s journal, which features both haiku and senryu.  As John says, “We find that we have a taste for senryu-flavored haiku and for senryu with a haiku tone.” [“Senryu” is, of course, poetry structurally similar to haiku, but primarily concerned with human nature; it is often humorous or satiric, dealing with the foibles and plight of human beings.]

Since October 2000, the Group has set aside poems from those presented during the meal for publication.  The first edition of their journal, Upstate Dim Sum: An Biannual Anthology of Haiku and Senryu, was published in the Spring of 2001. UDS features the haiku of the Four Members, plus a distinguished guest poet for each edition, and haiga by Ion Codrescu. The members fell into complementary roles in producing Upstate Dim Sum, with Yu Chang selecting poems from those set aside at their meetings, Hilary overseeing publication, and John handling “outreach” chores such as marketing and subscriptions.


Their Process. The monthly meetings of the Route 9 Haiku Group at the Tai Pan feature new haiku and senryu, shared and discussed over a leisurely meal of three, four, or five hours, with dim sum served at intervals throughout.
  • Each member is expected to bring 16 new poems, written on three sets of index cards (four sets, if Tom is able to join them from Ithaca, 180 miles away). Tom sends in his poems, when he cannot be there.
  • The index cards are dealt face-down, then turned over and read silently by all, including the author, one at a time.
  • After a period of response and discussion, which was sometimes very brief and sometimes as long as ten or fifteen minutes, the next poem is dealt.
  • At the end of a three to five hour meal, favorite poems are selected and added to a pool for the next issue of Upstate Dim Sum. Only about half of the poems in the pool are eventually used in the Journal, but many of them can be seen thereafter in other haiku publications.

As John has written, “We hope that this process, featuring a series of check points, is producing a good selection of poems. It is certainly producing good friendships and one day each month that we eagerly anticipate.” Christopher Herold’s prediction that the model presented by the Route 9 Haiku Group might be the “wave of the future” could just come true, after the fruits of their labors, inspiration, and friendship are demonstrated at HNA 2015.

 p.s. Group Groupie: Another Schenectady resident with a haiku connection, David Giacalone, has become the Designated Local Volunteer for HNA 2015. David first made the acquaintance of his Rt. 9 haiku friends about a decade ago, through his weblog f/k/a, which featured each of them among about two dozen Honored Guest Poets. With a daily dose of some of the best “real” English-language haiku, f/k/a bridged the gap between an audience interested in his mostly law-related punditry and the haiku world.  Because photography of his Schenectady Stockade historic neighborhood has become David’s primary hobby (presented at “suns along the Mohawk“), he has been drafted to help show potential and actual HNA 2015 registrants how lovely and interesting his adopted hometown can be. David hopes to see/meet many of his former Honored Guests, and meet many other haijin, in October’s autumn term at Union College.
