Sign-up for Workshops
A number of leaders of workshops and other events at HNA 2017 have requested that attendance be limited for a variety of reasons. We now have more than 215 registrants for HNA 2017, so the only way that we can sign up conference participants for these limited sessions in a fair and equitable way is to sign up registered attendees on a first-come, first-served basis.
Accordingly, the following procedures will be followed:
• The events affected are listed below. Some of these are new additions to the Program. You may wish to look at the Program Schedule at the HNA 2017 website to check for concurrent events.
• If you wish to sign up for one or more of these events, reply by e-mail to Charles Trumbull at [email protected] and indicate for which event(s) you wish to register. Please list your selections in order of preference.
• We will accept bids in the order they are sent (per date and time on the e-mail) and compile a list for each event. We will also set up an alternates list.
• You will be notified of your status by return e-mail.
• In case we do not not fill the affected events, additional sign-ups will be possible at the Conference.
• Good luck!
HNA 2017 Workshops and Demonstrations with Limited Participation
• The Power of Haiku and Practice
Natalie Goldberg
Thursday, Sept. 14, 3:00–4:00 —20 participants
In this hour we will explore the connection between Zen practice and the way of haiku, another great practice.
• Haiku: A First for Everything
Tom Painting
Thursday, Sept. 14, 4:00–5:00 —no limit on participants & observers, but if we
have more than 30 sign-ups we will schedule a second session
Unlock the rich treasury of your memory, the power of imagination and a keener awareness of the here-and-now. Participants will focus on “firsts” as a way isolate moments in time around which one may build haiku.
• Suminagashi Demonstration (off-site, at the New Mexico History Museum)
Tom Leech
Thursday, Sept. 14, 5:00–6:00 —15 participants
Curator Tom Leech of the Press at the Palace of the Governors will demonstrate the eleventh-century Japanese technique known as suminagashi, or “black ink floating.” Inherent in the art form is the implication of meandering water, wind-blown clouds and tumultuous topography. While this will not be a hands-on workshop, participants will be encouraged to pursue this meditative marbling practice on their own.
• Revising Haiku For Beginners
Scott Wiggerman (workshop)
Friday, September 15, 15:00-6:00 —20 participants, beginners only please!
Those new to haiku often sense that something’s not quite working in haiku they’ve written, but they don’t know what it is or how to fix it. In this critiquing workshop for newbies, Earthsigns co-editor Scott Wiggerman will lead the way in discussing haiku that you bring to the workshop, highlighting techniques that just might turn mediocre haiku into something you can be proud of. With open minds, be prepared to share, discuss, and put your worst work forward.
• One Brush Stroke (sumi-e demonstration & workshop)
Lidia Rozmus
1st session, Saturday, September 16, 10:00–11:30 —10 participants
2nd session, Saturday, September 16, 4:30–6:00 —10 participants
Renowned sumi-e and haiga master Lidia Rozmus demonstrates the Japanese art of black-ink painting, explaining the materials, preparations, and techniques involved. Workshop participants are invited to try their hand at sumi-e. All materials will be provided.
