![]() As fireworks burst over the Queen Mary, it is only six weeks until haiku poets will gather to listen to Mitsuye Yamada, watch Satsuki Ina's film, take a sabiki workshop with Kris Moon, listen to Michele Root-Bernstein talk about copy-ku, Patricia J. Machmiller discuss kigo, Michael Dylan Welch ponder the length of moment, Stewart Baker answer the question "Do all roads lead to Basho?", Richard Gilbert explore gendai haiku, Jim Kacian conduct a primer on organic haiku, among many other programming choices. And then, as if that wasn't enough, some will write a renku, others will participate in an anonymous haiku workshop and some may just sit on the deck, enjoy the breeze coming off the Pacific and just hang out with fellow haiku poets. Sound fun? See you there! http://www.haikunorthamerica.com/hna-conference-rates--registration.html

![]() Haiku in English: The First Hundred Years, a new Norton Anthology of English Language Haiku will debut at Haiku North America with a reading Friday night starting at 9 pm. Editor Jim Kacian will be the emcee and many of the poets included in the anthology are expected to be present. Please join us for what should be a wonderful evening of haiku. Often Sunday morning at Haiku North America is the time when people start heading to the airport. Because of this, some HNA schedules have little Sunday programming.
However, because the Tanka Society of America is hosting "Tanka Sunday" on the Queen Mary immediately following the closing of HNA at noon, we do have a full morning of programming planned: Patricia Machmiller: A Jewel in the Crown: The Interplay between Haiku Form and Meaning - a Workshop Terry Ann Carter: Beyond the Fold - Flutter Books: The Interval Between Image and Text Margaret Chula: A Sketch of Life: From Haiku to Tanka Wendy Wright and Genie Nakano: Notes Toward an Analysis of the Embedded Physical and Cognitive Levels of Haiku - or - Spoken Haiku: From the Page to the Stage Closing Ceremonies: Jessica Tremblay - Old Pond Comics Goes Overboard Carlos Colon: A Performance by Haiku Elvis plus more Tanka Sunday Tanka Sunday is being held on the Queen Mary from 1 pm to 9 pm on Sunday, August 18th. It requires a separate registration: https://sites.google.com/site/tankasocietyofamerica/tanka-sunday/tanka-sunday-registration The program features Professor Steven D. Carter as the keynote speaker. Additional speakers, readers, and performers include Margaret Chula, Amelia Fielden, Marilyn Hazelton, Peggy Heinrich, Mariko Kitakubo, Genie Nakano, David Rice, Kozue Uzawa, Michael Dylan Welch, and Kathabela Wilson. The complete program can be viewed here: https://sites.google.com/site/tankasocietyofamerica/tanka-sunday/tanka-sunday-schedule The Haiku North America Committee is happy to announce that registrations for the 2013 conference have been strong. We already have over 80 poets registered and committed to attending. These poets are traveling to Long Beach from all over the United States, as well as from Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and India.
The conference features over 70 sessions of readings, workshops, panels, papers, and presentations. http://www.haikunorthamerica.com/hna-conference-schedule.html Several poets have asked us for an extension on the early bird rates and we felt it was unfair to extend the lower rates for a select few, so we are extending the early bird deadline to July 24, 2013. Please see our website for details on how to register: http://www.haikunorthamerica.com/hna-conference-rates--registration.html Although the time has passed for guaranteed inclusion in the HNA anthology, we urge you to still submit if you have not done so. The editors will do their best to accommodate late submissions up to the deadline for submitting the anthology to print. (Note: You must be registered to submit): http://www.haikunorthamerica.com/2013-hna-anthology.html We are looking forward to seeing you on the Queen Mary in August.
