Mission District Mural Walk
Wednesday, September 24, 2025, 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Murals first appeared in San Francisco’s Mission District in the 1970s and soon became central to the area’s identity. Over the decades artists have used the walls of the Mission, its buildings, and even entire alleyways to give voice to matters of social and political importance to the neighborhood. We’ll start in beautiful Precita Park, hear stories that inspired the murals, and finish in Balmy Alley where you will see a display of powerful works expressing feelings about immigration, war, gentrification, as well as healing and the celebration of women. This is an unforgettable walk, both visually dazzling and emotionally impactful.

Before the tour begins Allyson Whipple will guide us on writing urban haiku. She will also facilitate haiku sharing written during the tour after our walk has ended. This will be a great way to start off the conference with some newly generated haiku!

Meet in front of Charlie’s Deli Cafe, 3202 Folsom St. at Precita at 11:30 a.m. Please note that our meeting place to start the tour has been revised.

  • Consider getting a group Uber or Lyft ride from the hotel.
  • Public transportation: MUNI lines 12, 27.
  • View transit directions on Google Maps.
  • Learn more about the murals.

Following the tour, those who would like to socialize, write, and/or have lunch (no host) before heading back to the hotel can do so at Taqueria Vallarta at 3033 24th Street, a ten-minute walk from the start of the mural tour. Bookstores, small businesses and shops, cafés, and restaurants abound in this neighborhood. Estimated end time for the tour and gathering afterward is 2:30 p.m. Price: $30

Bay Cruise
Sunday, September 28, 2025, about 3:00 p.m.

On Sunday afternoon at around 3:00 p.m. (exact time to be announced closer to the date) join us for a one-hour cruise of the San Francisco Bay. We will be joining a public bay cruise operated by the Blue and Gold Fleet with a group discount. This will be a great opportunity to continue conversations and friendships begun at the conference and to take in the stunning views of the city, the Golden Gate and Bay bridges, Alcatraz, and Angel Island. This event is subject to cancellation if we do not have a minimum of 15 people register for it. Price: $30
Note: The Tanka Society of America will hold a gathering for anyone interested in tanka poetry at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 28. For more information, please visit the TSA website.
